The only significant natural food sources of vitamin D are fatty fish (e.g. Infants, children and older adults are especially prone to have inadequate dietary intake of vitamin D. On average, Canadian adults do not obtain sufficient vitamin D from dietary sources to meet the current RDA of 600 to 800 IU. However, vitamin D toxicity usually requires much higher consumption of over 10,000 IU per day – see the Vitamin D Toxicity section below.
